ENT experiences please?

Hi, so I have today, finally, received my 2 week fast track referral appointment letter (for 6 weeks after I saw my GP- and letter even says 2 week fast track referral ) and it is for the ENT clinic and I am being seen due to a hard lump on the side of neck which has grown in size from around 1cm to at least 4cm. Can anybody tell me what will happen at this appointment from experience please?

Thank you

  • Hi there,

Am guessing you were given an ultrasound to find out the lump in your neck had grown in size? Mine was diagnosed as a stage 3 from the (5 stages) 3cm by 3cm or could've been 3 and 5?!  No intervention was required as they said is done by a Newer system of stage changes, since near voice box no need for surgery unless necessary so they left it.

2 years on sent for another scan as had tiredness and sweats etc, but since thyroid bloods were fine, sent to scan my neck lump and it's grown to the stage 5 in size, sent to ENT clinic.

Had a camera through my nose both sides and into my throat, not affected my voice box, but will need a biopsy/MRI too.

Told some redness could be abit of acid reflux too as some of the skin in imaging shows colour pointed out to me as being too pale and there's redness in throat, also advised to take gaviscon and not snack. Awaiting my ultrasound Monday 16th, MRI 31st, then ultrasound again September 9th. Also a biopsy.

Best and well wishes to you :)

  • Hiya, so sorry if I didn't explain my post very well! I haven't been seen yet, my referral appointment is on the 1st September. About 5 years ago I found a lump about 1-2cm on the side of my neck, went to GP who put it down as lymphadenopathy and just did blood tests which were normal. Then it's grown to at least 4cm now so GP said they wanted it checking out so referred me via the 2 week pathway- that was on 22nd July. So I was just wondering what may happen on my first appointment with ENT. Thank you so much for your reply, it's really appreciated and I hope you are ok

  • Hey that's okay,

It's a first time for me replying to one of these posts to be honest and I'm waffling lots!

Yours sounds different to mine as mines in my thyroid but no thyroid issues in my bloods either, think they'll ultrasound your neck at the ENT clinic as they'll  scan your lump and see the clear imaging if any other lumps are present or the actual size from the GP visit you've already had.

Hopefully all goes well, you'll likely have more images like myself and a biopsy if required after that. They'll ask for any symptoms maybe after the ultrasound at a next follow up with them like I did I should imagine although you could be getting the camera inserted first with discussion from there as to what will happen next.

    Best of luck

  • Ok, thank you very much. Best of luck to you too, I hope all goes well for you

  • Hey... I had a half thyroid lobectomy a few weeks ago. When I found the lump I called my gp who thought it was a goiter. She sent me to the hospital for a scan. They then referred me to ENT for a 2 week wait appt. My appt came through within a few days. At my first ENT appt he said they will have to do another scan as they hadn't rated my nodule and were not sure what to do next. The usually rate them from U1-U5. My nodule was 3.9x2cm so on the larger side.

So my next appt 4 weeks later, they did a scan, fine needle biopsy and had the camera down my throat. They rated the nodule which was classified as U3 and biopsy came back as inconclusive. So I was given the choice to have it removed or have another scan in 6 months and see if its grows etc. Anything 4cm and over they like to remove. So I decided to go for the op due to the biopsy being inconclusive. I only had to wait 6 weeks for my op which I thought was excellent due to covid backlog.

Anyway had my op 3 weeks ago today. They are going to be doing a biopsy on the lump they removed and I have a appt with my consultant in a couple weeks for results.

I'm quite surprised how long it has taken for your first appt. Especially as it was a 2 week wait appt. Hope it all goes well for you xx

  • Hi, thank you for replying with your experience, and I hope your results come back with something positive for you.

Yes, if I'm completely honest I am not really very happy about waiting so long when the GP told me on the 22/7 that my appointment would be within two weeks, then I've waited 3 weeks for even the appointment letter to come which is still just under 3 weeks away- and the letter even states your GP has referred you to be seen within two weeks- but I guess they have delays etc.

Hoping it's nothing or something simple as it's been there for such a long time but has grown. It's a solid lump on the side of my neck in the sort of area where your glands are either side of your neck, and I have no pain or any other symptoms that I am aware of.

Thanks again for replying, it's nice to speak to other people on here and hear of their experiences

  • Hi.

When I got my letter for my NHS consultant appointment, I also got a text message asking me to accept the appointment time, did you get this?

I've never switched to a contract phone and still on Pay As You Go and just hadn't topped up so couldn't text back to accept. This meant I called them simply to accept my appointment but that meant I got to speak with someone and they asked if I was free the next day as there was a cancellation. Its just an idea to call a number if you have one.

Any head and neck ultrasounds have to be completed by a consultant radiographer instead of a technician so that's why they said there was such a waiting list when I had to wait originally. On the plus side though this does mean they typically give results there and then as they don't have to wait for them to be interpreted and reported.

Hope this helps and wishing you the best.

  • Ah ok thank you for the insight! No, I haven't received a text message, should I have to accept the appointment?

  • Hi I did get a phone call from the hospital leaving a voicemail to confirm my appointment, even though I had letters arrive with the appointment dates too.

I called back to confirm and then received the texts after.

  • I wonder if different areas are different or whether I'll get one nearer the time? Oh it's all so confusing at a time when people are all worried enough about the referral
