Mole Biopsy Results.

Hi, I'm new here and super anxious.

I've had a mole removed 2 weeks ago today by my GP and am currently awaiting results. Does anyone have any idea how long it normally takes?

Also he took pictures of another mole I have to send to a dermatologist to review. Does this seem normal if he removed this one straight away?

I'm panicking so much and struggling to think of anything else. I'm petrified of the results if I'm honest.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

Results are currently taking anything from 6 to 8 weeks I'm afraid. Some hospitals are starting to get them back a little quicker - it just depends how busy their histology is.

Not many GP's remove moles - only those who specialise in dermatology & have a surgical clinic within their practice. I can only think that your other mole looks so unusual that they want a second opinion from a dermatologist. Dermatologists are used to this happening but usually from GPs who haven't been trained in dermatology.

There is good chance both your moles are fine so try not to think it's a done deal & it will be bad news. Even if one of them is malignant, most melanomas are easily treated with no further problems.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Thank you so much for your reply. My anxiety is through the roof and I'm trying to enjoy the school holidays with my little girl and this is constantly going through my mind. 6 to 8 weeks is so long but it can't be helped I guess.

Yeah the same GP that removed my mole on my back is the same one that has sent some pictures to the dermatologist for them to look at. The mole he removed was a raised one so I wasn't sure if that has anything to do with it and this one is a flat one that he's taken photos of.

  • Hi Stacey,

A raised mole isn't necessarily a problem unless it's accompanied by any other warning signs. I'm assuming he looked at them with a dermascope? It may be that he wasn't sure if the cells of the mole had some unusual activity so that's why he's sent a pictures through to dermatology. Second opinions from their peers is a common occurence so try not to worry - the dermatologist has just seen far more moles than your GP has. Hopefully they will think it looks fine.
