Chronic sore throat and frustrating wait times

Really at my wit's end here. I've had a mostly one-sided (right) sore throat for close to 5-6 months now. I put off seeing a doctor for a few months as the pain was so mild I barely noticed it and would just put it down to dry air, voice strain etc. I've also got a very slightly enlarged tonsil on the same side. A blood test a month ago came back normal, including my inflammation markers, as did a more recent test. After trialling a nasal spray for a month to treat suspected post-nasal drip, the pain is no worse or better than when I started. Now I've got a referral to an ENT but the appointment isn't for weeks and weeks and I'm so worried that I've waited so long that if it is something nefarious then I'll be in real trouble. The pain doesn't even bother me, just makes me aware that something isn't quite right. As I'm not a smoker and I'm HPV vaccinated (and considering I'm only 20) I don't think the doctor thinks it's cancer but Dr Google (I know I know) just keeps leading me back to throat and tonsil cancer. I'm not sure if I should be comforted by nobody being in a particular rush (apart from me) to find out the cause.

Anyway, sorry for the rant but it's all I can think about at the moment - hope all is well for whomever reads this !

  • Hello Jamontoast123,

I just wanted to welcome you to our forum. I am sorry to hear you are having to wait weeks for your ENT appointment. I can imagine it must be a very stressful time for you while waiting for these important appointment.

I know it is really hard but try not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be. The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and you guessed well steer clear of Dr Google and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious. There are some helpful tips on this page on how to cope while waiting for news.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine.

    Best wishes,
