Suspicous Calcification in right breast

Hi I am 48 and I found a lump 4 weeks ago in my right breast which was painful

I had my appointment yesterday at the breast clinic. Saw a breast nurse specialist who examined me and said it felt like a thickening. Had mammogram, then went for ultrasound. The radiologist explained to me that the mammogram had found a cluster of calcification that looked suspicious and after the ultrasound she told me that she needed to do a biopsy and that my lymph nodes were raised so will also take a biopsy of them  I had the biopsys and a marker tag put where the biopsy had been taken, all this was painless due to the local anaesthetic. Was told that i would see the nurse specialist again who would explain what happens next. In all this time my husband was waiting outside due to Covid restrictions. However when the nurse called me in she said my husband could come in, which I was glad of. She and another nurse sat me in a room and told me that they couldnt clearly say that i had breast cancer as they score each test and the examination felt like a thickening due to hormone changes as i am menopausal, but the mammogram picked up what looks cancerous, but the ultrasound didnt pick it up so thats why they have done the biopsys. She said with some patients you can definatley tell that its cancer from the mammo and ultrasound but with me its 50/50. She told me that she will add me to the MDT meeting on Monday but I wont get my results till next Thursday when i see the breast surgeon. Is this common to say that 1 test says it looks cancerous and the other says it doesnt?  Has anyone else been told a similar thing? Im worried sick incase ive had it for a long time without knowing and that the overheating at night isnt because of menopause its because its spread and thats why. All sorts is going through my head and im so confused.

  • Hello Alibobs73 and welcome to Cancer Chat!

What a stressful time for you... Being told that it's 50/50 has understandably left you super confused and having to wait even a few days to get clarity on all this must feel like a lifetime. It won't be long now though until next Thursday so try if you can to focus on other things while you are waiting even though it must be really hard for you to think about anything else at the moment. The overheating at night is very likely to be linked to the menopausal hormonal changes you are going through so try to keep calm if you can about this and mention it to your doctor if you are worried about it.

The best thing to do to avoid thinking too much about this is to keep busy and distracted if you can and avoid looking things up online. I can imagine it is hard for you to do this at the moment but it will help you feel a little less anxious. There are some useful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for news.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have been through all this before and who have been told a similar thing and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

Keeping everything crossed for you that everything turns out fine and you get some proper answers very soon.

    Best wishes,
