Long wait to get answers worried about the next month

About 2 years ago I noticed bright red blood on the toilet paper. Just a small amount.  I was 38 and female. As a teenager Id gone to the GP with the same complaint and told it would be a fissure.  So when Id seen this initially I assumed it was that.  It would come and go.  No other symptoms.  Then i noticed drops of bright blood in the toilet and went to the GP.  They asked for a FOBT stool sample and blood test.  Blood test showed borderline Anaemia but FOBT came back clear.  They prescrived me iron tablets and a sigmpidoscopy due to the colour of the blood.  I had the test last Novemeber.  More than just uncomfortable, with sedation.  This came back clear as well, they told me on the table.  No fishers, no polyps, no hemorrhoids. Great! I thought while in the recovery room.  No follow up from GP. Case closed.  Then January and April heavier bleeding with clots this time and mucus on 2 occasions. Back to the GP in May. They  were reluctant to refer and wanted to consult their colleagues.  I was sent down the gynecological route.  I have always had heavy periods and they wondered if this was related to endometriosis. So an Ultrasound found a small 3cm cyst on one ovary. Reffered for a pelvis MRI. This confirmed it was an endiometris related cyst on the ovary but no sign of endometriosis near the lower bowel. (I think they can only see the area alread checked on the sigmoidoscopy)

I was then referred to colorectal specialist. She was more concerned when she asked to see the pictures.  She said that was a lot of blood and has me in for an urgent CT scan of pelvis and abdomen and a colonoscopy.

Today there were blood clots in the toilet again and lots of blood on the toilet paper.  My CT scan is this week and my colonoscopy (Ive asked for General aesthetic as I know i would be a failed scan as  found the sigmpidoscopy really difficult) I have a pre op assesment at the start of September. Only 2 weeks after the earliest available Colonoscopy.

I am so worried about results.  I worry that theres no explanation left for the increased bleeding.  Has anyone had an endometriosis related blood in stool? Was this discovered at the CT scan and not at the MRI?

Or has anyone found something non sinister on a colonoscopy after a normal sigmoidoscopy?

Also - I will update my results on this thread when I get them as I know how much Ive gone to these threads looking for reassurance and alternative diagnosis to what I fear is coming.

I have 3 boys under 8 and feel huge guilt for not getting answers properly 2 years ago.

  • Hello Bestbeok

I'm sorry to hear that you've been dealing with ongoing health concerns for a while now. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious but it's good to hear that so far the investigations haven't given any immediate cause for concern.

Endometriosis can be difficult to diagnose and indeed one of the associated symptoms can be rectal bleeding. If you've not already then you might find it helpful to have a look at the Endometriosis UK website for some further information and support.

Hopefully the CT you have arranged for this week will give some answers and reassurance about what is responsible for your symptoms ahead of the colonoscopy in a few weeks.

We know that it can be a really difficult period waiting for tests and answers but sometimes it can help to chat things through with someone. If you'd like to talk with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

I hope that you have some news soon. Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
