Gastrectomy

So to recap on my story I have a type of polyp.in my.duodenum which can become cancerous. So I guess I am lucky it has been found 'in time'.  I have had a CT scan of chest and abdomen which found nothing to worry about.  An attempt is to be made to remove the polyp via EMR - endo mucosal resection.  I go into hospital on Wednesday for surgery the next day.  I attended for pre op assessment this week.  The nurse said she had on my notes gastrectomy and colonoscopy.  The latter I understand and I do want this done.. I am finding the past  3.5 months of working through to this point a bit frustrating.  Have been shunted from one professional to another with nobody seemingly taking the lead and giving me an overview of things.  So on hearing about a gastrectomy am I to have part of my stomach removed together with a portion of my duodenum?!  Has anybody any experience to share please?  I have healthy pancreas and bile duct so guessing they would not look to do a Whipple.  Anybody?

  • Hi Celticlass,

It sounds as if there is a bit of confusion what what's to come, so I would suggest the best bet is to speak to your doctor to understand what's happening and to ask any questions you have. It's important of course that you're fully informed about all this.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5), although they wouldn't be able to advise specifically on your situation as such.

I hope it all goes OK this week.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
