Positive Fit Test

Hi. I just wanted to introduce myself and share some of my fears and anxieties over my recent health issues

I've  had severe diarrhes for six weeks. Spoke to the doctors at two weeks had blood and stools tests. At week three doctors rang to say  Blood came back with slight raised inflammation markers they suggested diverticulitis but told to do a fit test, didn't hear anything back from the doctors so thought fit test must be ok and diarrhea had  started to slow from five or six times a day to once or twice, but yesterday was horrendous so rang the doctors who rang me back to say fit test was positive. They'd also been asking me if I'd lost weight which I said no, but last night noticed a little bit of weight loss as I got undressed and got scales to see I've lost half a stone. I've been referred for urgent two week camera but I see that people are talking numbers on the fit test. My doctor didn't mention any, so thinking maybe they're high and he's not making me anxious. (As if given my symptoms I'm not already).  So right now just hoping the urgent referral is as quick as possible.

  • Hi Polly63,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to hear of how things are with you at the moment - it's good to hear you've got this checked out and hopefully now with the referral it won't be too much longer to wait to find out more.

I hope the appointment comes around soon and that things ease a little for you.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Hi

I just wanted to update my original post.  I got my colonoscopy yesterday, which was one week from my doctor urgently referring me. I was really concerned about whether I'd managed the prep well enough for a good colonoscopy as I vomited both times while taking the moviprep. The first dose I managed to get down in an hour and was down to the last two mouthful and just could stop myself from vomiting. Thought I'd brought it all back up, but it started to work and I spent around three hours in the loo and was up once during the night. I took the morning dose slower over around two hours hoping it would be better but only managed three quarters of it before vomiting. Still went to the loo but less often.

When I got to the clinic I was really nervous after reading some people's experiences but the nurse was lovely trying to put me at ease saying her daughter had it done the day before without sedation, so I felt a bit of a wimp when I said I was going to go for sedation but thought my times of  tough and brave (three kids without pain relief) was over.

Going in for the procudure  and once again nurses were really nice, the lady doctor who did the procedure was too. It wasn't anywhere near as bad as I thought it would be, I did use gas and air during some of the more discomforting parts. But it was a lot less painful than I'd expected.

My diagnosis was: no sign of cancer, several random biopsies taken to check for microscopic colitis, several Diverticula found, therefore Diverticulosis

I also found out my Fit test was 16, which the doctor said was only slightly elevated but you can have a normal fit test and still have cancer, so anyone who has other  ongoing symptoms after a negative test should continue to speak to their GP.

And they also said my prep was excellent!

So even though I'd vomited it had done  it's job. Though I must say I hadn't eaten much for about five days before my scan and stuck to the recommended diet and eating only very small portions.

One final thought.  When I came out and was discussing the whole thing with the nurse she said they actually like patients to have sedation as it makes any extra procedures they might have to do far easier for them and the patient,  so anyone having this procedure shouldn't feel bad about asking for sedation.
