Terrified it might be skin cancer

I've had this mark on the back of my leg for around 18 months now.  It came as a result of an insect bite but has never gone.  I finally bit the bullet today and contacted my gp to get it checked...I have had to take a picture and send it in but I am now terrified that it might be cancer.  It has never get bigger or changed or anything in the time I've had it.  I didn't know where to turn do thought I'd post here and ask if other people have been in a similar situation and what was the outcome?

Thanks in advance any replies greatful.

  • Hi,

It's good that you have arranged a GP appointment for it to be checked out.

As you know the mark is the result of an insect bite, it may possibly be a dermatofibroma. This is when the insect bite calcifies and becomes a small hard lump. They are quite harmless but take years to slowly break down and disappear. and they are more prevalent on the legs. I had one on the back of each leg for a long time & my dermatologist pointed them out & explained what they were. Three years ago I had a suspicious lesion (possible Basal Cell Carcinoma) removed from my shoulder - it turned out to be another dermatofibroma! This website may help you know if it's possibly one of these dermnetnz.org/.../

Good luck and hopefully the GP or a dermatologist (if referred) can put your mind at rest. Please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
