Breast pain pit of the blue, over 50, no periods, upset!

I have quite severe pain in the side of my breast. Worse when lying down.  Plaguing my sleep, wakes me up, or I dream of being in pain.  No other symptoms. But I haven't had breast pain in years. 6 years since last period. Last mammogram 13 months ago, all clear.

Dr not seeing patients in person yet without intimate discussions first with the receptionist.  I don't mind, I'm not shy, but I don't want to make a fuss if what I've read is right and pain alone won't ever get me a referral to the breast clinic.  Any thoughts please.  Thank you

  • Please make a fuss and speak to someone.  I have recently had surgery and radiotherapy for breast cancer that was found early at a routine mammogram.  I had been experiencing breast pain for a few months, am post menopausal and hadn't had breast pain for a while.  I didn't realise that this can be a symptom so I ignored it.  I was just lucky that I was due a mammogram.  Yours may be nothing but do get it checked.  The breast clinic where I was treated told me I would have been referred had I gone to the dr.

  • Kazzad21 can I please ask what the pain felt like?  And you say it was still caught early? I was beginning to worry that pain was only a late onset symptom.

Please accept my prayers for your recovery. I'm so glad they found it and you were able to have prompt treatment.

  • Thank you - I was extremely lucky.  It was a constant achy pain that got worse at certain times.  It could be excruciating when I turned over in bed without thinking.  It was much worse when I hadn't got a supportive bra on and seemed to be worse at night, although I think when you are not distracted by other things anything feels worse at night.  I checked for lumps and as I couldn't find anything dismissed the pain.  It was getting gradually more constant so I was just about to make an appointment with the dr when my mammogram appointment came through.  I decided to wait and see how that went.

I spoke to the nurse when I went for the mammogram who said that I should have contacted the dr straight away and asked to be referred to the breast clinic.  I've seen since that breast pain can be a symptom but I was completely unaware of this.
