Worried sick after concerning MRI and PET throat scans

Hi all,

Just looking for some company while in an agonizing wait for my arranged biopsy date to come round in two weeks. I had one sided sore throat for six weeks, went to GP who referred to ENT. Found enlarged tonsil on one side, but all healthy on inspection with camera down my nose and throat. Was then sent to MRI anyway. MRI showed worrying 'signal' from my tonsil to the glossotonsilar sulcus (means back of tongue I think). Sent for PET scan. Showed hot spot that could be tumor or infection. ENT thinks it is all most likely harmless muscular tension because cannot see anything with camera. But anyway to be sure suggested biopsy and perhaps tonsillectomy. I am worried sick, not knowing is horrible. How to survive this terrible waiting for the answer??

  • Hi Redcar,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. It's good to hear that the ENT specialist doesn't seem too concerned, but I appreciate the waiting is always difficult.

Many people say it helps to keep busy while you wait to help keep your mind off things, and to focus on taking things a day at a time.

I hope you're able to find out more soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Thank you Ben. I am in a better place now, and am managing to stay busy and optimistic while I wait for the surgery date.

  • Just an update, for anyone who goes through something similar in future: I had a tonsillectomy, with biopsy taken, and got the all clear today. No cancer. So relieved. My tonsils (removed as a child) had regrown and had a deep seated infection that got removed. It seems that MRI and PET scan cannot distinguish infection from cancer. I am so relieved, my thoughts go out to anyone who goes through a similar experience.

  • That's great news Redcar, we're so pleased for you.

Thank you for coming back to update us as I'm sure it will help many members who find themselves in a similar situation.

Now, go and relax and maybe celebrate with a tipple or two
