Thyroidectomy

Hi,

ive had half my thyroid removed this week. I still don't know if I have cancer. This wait is something else!!

I wondered if anyone here has had this procedure and are happy to share their recovery after surgery. So far I feel exhausted and I'm having hot flashes. Assuming this is my body getting used having something missing and not signs of hypothyroidism.

  • Hi Liz

I had a partial thyroid lobectomy aswell. Just over 10 days ago. I felt absolutely awful for the first few days and my mood was everywhere in the first week too. I had alot of fatigue in the first week and thought it was my hormones playing up. My sleeping hadn't been great either. Feeling abit more myself since having stitches out. I think our bodies will react in different ways.

I actually had a 4cm lump on my thyroid gland which is why they wanted to operate. I had no other symptoms, bloods and scan were fine but biopsy was inconclusive.

Have they told you when your follow up appt is? My surgeon said it will be 3 weeks after op as they should have some results back. The wait is awful.

How are you feeling about it all?

  • Reading your story it could be my own! I had a 5cm nodule and no other symptoms and an inconclusive biopsy! Thankyou for sharing.

I'm a little in wonderland that it all happened and I've had the surgery. It's now 1 week since my surgery. My surgeon originally said 2-3 weeks for a follow up but my hospital discharge says 4 to 6 weeks which I hope isn't true as that feels like a long time to wait.

I think also the waiting to know is the hardest part but I suppose the surgery and recovery focus is a good distraction as that's a very present thing.

Hope you have good support around you and are recovering well. I have my fingers crossed for you x

  • Yes I totally agree, I will have to look on my discharge papers too. I have read so many posts and it really does vary. I'm actually dreading the results tbh. I'm so worried I will need the other side out and other treatments too. It really is quite worrying which is why I want to know but just focusing on recovery for now. With it being summer hols too, my 5yr old at home is definitely keeping my mind off things.

When did you notice your lump? If you would rather msg privately let me know. So good to spk to someone going through that same thing at the same time.

  • It would be great to message private and keep in touch. It sounds like we are in similar circumstances! I have a nearly 2 year old. Really missing those big wrap around cuddles.

I first noticed a lump early in may. It was only small and grew quite a bit within a 6 week period :(

all your worries feel like your reading my mind! The unknown being the worst part x

  • Yes definitely, I have sent a friends request. Like you say we certainly have the same worries etc.

I know what you mean, I am really missing my hugs with my little girl. She's such a cuddly person aswell but luckily she does understand too. Although she has been super cute as she's wanted to help out with everything lol.

  • Hi both.

I had a full thyroidectomy and right neck dissection last week, discharged yesterday now starting to recover at home.

My FNA was conclusive which is why they could proceed with the full procedure right away. I have a follow up this Friday but my consultant has already said RAI will be required. I think "knowing" does make it a little easier as I don't feel like I'm waiting for results anymore.

I'm currently experiencing lots of numbness, do either of you have this? I wasn't expecting it.

    E.

  • Hey...aww bless ya. How many days were you in hospital? Bet you're glad to be home.

It's alot to take in isn't it. Like you said it probably is easier to deal with than not knowing. Im assuming you are on tablets too.

Do you mean numbness around the neck? That lasted until a few days ago for me. But I do have quite a large lump/bruising on the front of my neck. When I had my stitches out last Friday, the nurse said that was due to them cutting the thyroid in half, so it was the bruising from inside. All I know is that it's really sore to touch too.

I really hope you recover quickly and here if you want to chat. It's horrible that we are all going through this.

  • I'm only a week post op and I've got a lot of numbness. But also really sore!! Really looking forward to a visit to an osteopath to stretch my neck and back

I've actually had a cesarean before and my tummy is only just getting more feeling around it two years later. But the numbness is a really odd sensation and it's where the body is stitching together again. quite amazing how our bodies work!!

sorry to hear you didn't have good news on your results but yes- knowing there's a plan and the path your on must be some relief.
