Advice Referral Timescale

After having a negative blood stool sample, a negative inflamation stool sample and a normal set of blood tests returned due to persisting loose stools my doctor agreed to a non-urgent colonoscopy.

I have been waiting probably over a month to hear back about this, but today after some recent improvements in bowel movements I passed what you could probably describe as a quite large stool.

There was blood or what looked like red blood smeared on the side of this movement. This is the first time I have seen blood on a stool, I do occasionally suffer from fissures and have done for many years, but they normally show in the form of blood on the paper when wiping.

I've gone to my Doctor to ask if the referral can be made more urgent.

What sort of timeframe should I be looking at on the NHS to get in and get this looked at?

  • Hello awaitingtest,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation but it's a good thing that you're being seen by your doctor.

As for your question, if you're in England, you might want to have a look at this NHS page about waiting times.

Hopefully other members who had to wait for this type of referral will come along shortly to share their experience with you. Also, feel free to reach out to our team of nurses. You can call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    I  hope this helps.

    All the best,
