Left breast lump and weird “let down” feeling

Hi all,

I've been reading posts for a few days and thought I would ask here for some experiences from others.

I am 34 and for a few months have been experiencing a weird heaviness and a feeling of what I can only describe as a "let down" when breastfeeding (I've not breastfed for over 3 years) I also get pains in the top of my left shoulder and arm, sometimes all the way to my hand (like a dead/ dull ache kind of feeling but I'm always on the go and just put it down to some pulled muscles or something minor.

On Thursday evening however I found a small lump deep in my left breast. I was lucky enough to get an appointment with the GP on Friday morning. On examination she found the lump, an area that felt "lumpy" opposite the lump I'd found and some thickening above the nipple too. The GP immediately said she was referring me to the breast clinic and I've been put on the urgent 2ww referral. Now waiting for the breast centre appointment.
Obviously I'm beyond worried as I have 3 children (15,4 and 3 )

Just to add (maybe no relevance but just for background)

-I've been having problems with acne for the past year - I never had acne as a teen so that's pretty annoying in your 30s. (Been on AB's and steroid cream that didn't help)

-Also my periods stopped in December (on the mini pill and have been for years in between having my children and always had regular periods with it)

-my hair hasn't grown in the last year either (strange as would always grow quite quickly.

-had bloods done for above and to check my TSH. All that came back was high cholesterol ‍♀️

im waffling now (sorry!!) and I should have known better than to google symptoms because I'm sure we all know what that equals

  • Hello Fullofworry

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some breast health concerns recently. it's understandable that you're feeling anxious but it's great to know that you've already seen your GP and been referred to the breast clinic.

The large majority of women who attend breast clinic do not go on to be diagnosed with cancer so hopefully, this information will help you remain positive about things. In the meantime, you might find it helpful to talk things through with one of our team of nurses. I'm sure they will be able to give you some advice, information, and reassurance ahead of your appointment. If you would like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

Do let u know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi I hope this finds you,

I am 34 and experiencing the letdown reflex feeling along with 3 lumps in left breast that are sore at times. GP has sent breast clinic referral, how did yours turn out?

  • Hiya ,

Please try not to worry yourself. I know it's hard because I was also in that state of panic and fearing the worst! So I went for my check where they did an exam by hand and then went into a separate room for the ultrasound. They reported that my breasts were "ropey" and I'm to keep an eye on the lump and go back if any change but they wasn't concerned and said it was likely hormonal. I have since been diagnosed with arthritis in my neck so the cause of the shoulder pain is to do with that.
Have you had your referral appointment date yet? Big hugs x

  • Thank you so so so much for responding, I only went to GP yesterday so not sure when I will get my appointment for clinic. You have really helped my anxiety over this it's greatly appreciated

sorry to hear about the arthritis I hope it isn't giving you to much pain xx
