2WW

I am 29, I've just been referred to the Breast Clinic on a 2WW referral and I can't stop worrying.

I've had some issues with my left breast on/off for a few months and I always wrote them off. I had shooting pain down my breast and swelling under my arm. But now for around 8 weeks I've had swelling to the outer part of my left breast which has got progressively worse, pain under my arm and some swollen lymphnodes. I find the pain very similar to mastitis which I had when I was breastfeeding. Since seeing the GP my pain has now spread to my collar bone and my arm aches constantly.

I'm wondering if anyone has had similar symptoms and what the outcome was for you?

And also what should I expect from the clinic appointment?

  • Hello Rlh.x

I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with some ongoing concerns about your breast health at the moment. It sounds as if it's been quite uncomfortable and understandably a worrying time.

It's good to hear that you've been referred to see the specialist at the breast clinic. It may help you to know that the majority of people referred to breast clinic are not diagnosed with cancer so try to stay positive whilst waiting for your appointment.

It's likely at the clinic that they will take a history of your symptoms and then the Consultant will examine your breasts. As you're under 40, it's unlikely that they will ask for a mammogram as younger women have denser breast tissue which makes it more difficult for the breasts to be scanned clearly. However, they may want to do an ultrasound and some clinics are able to offer this on the same day. Sometimes if an area that needs further investigation is identified, a breast biopsy is carried out.

You mention that the pain has changed since you saw your GP. Do let them know if this continues or gets worse. It may be that they want to pass that information on to the breast team ahead of your appointment.

I hope that you won't have to wait too long and that things settle for you soon.

    Best wishes,
