I'm 18 and I am terrified

Hi.

I am 18 years old and I've been having stomach problems for 3 years now. It all started in 2018 with a stomach pain that would occur every couple of weeks. I've had an ultrasound, and ran dozens of blood tests since then. In January of 2019 my stool test was POSITIVE for blood but I never saw the blood in my stool. Despite the test being positive, my doctor sent me home with pain killers... My symptoms continued going away and coming back again and again. I have visited the hospital numerous times since then but all they had done are blood tests which were always perfect. I've been diagnosed with anxiety and depression and they said that everything was just in my head. June 2020: occult-blood-in-stool test positive again. Also I starred feeling kind of sleepy most of the time. They sent me home.  In July 2020 I started experiencing nausea and severe headache. Guess what they did? Blood tests, all over again. Headache and nausea went away a few days later and they came back in December 2020, May 2021 and now - July 2021. So there's always this pause between these attacks of nausea and headaches. I don't know what to do. I've gone mad because of these symptoms! I don't know why they didn't do a colonoscopy or something. I'm also scared to get the colonoscopy done because I'm terrified that they might find something serious...

Could you please give me some advices. Should I be worried? I know I should but still... I started experiencing the symptoms when I was 15 and I am 18 now. Is bowel/colon cancer common at this young age? Could it be something else like ulceritive colitis, IBS etc. I'm worried about these headaches also.

I just want to thank you in advance for your answers and advices.

  • Hello Jace3007

I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with some health problems. It sounds like it's been a worrying time for you and I can understand that you're feeling frustrated.

Anxiety and depression can manifest themselves in many ways including having physical symptoms. If that is what is causing your symptoms then what is your GP doing to help you manage things more appropriately? I'd certainly suggest going back to your GP to raise your concerns. It may be that they're able to refer you for some mental health support but also it may be that they want to carry out additional tests or arrange a referral that A&E have not done/been able to do to check that there is no other underlying cause for things.

You might find it helpful before your appointment to write down a list of everything that has happened and how often you are experiencing symptoms to see if a pattern can be identified.

I do hope that things settle and improve for you soon.

    Best wishes,
