Non urgent referral - 24 years old with breast lump

I'm feeling a little anxious..I felt a lump in my breast 4 months ago but as I had a baby in December I thought it could be a milk duct or something hormonal. (Did not Breastfeed)

I went to the doctors today about it as it's still there. The doctor said it's 1cm in length and isn't sure what it is, so I've been referred. However, as I'm only 24 she said it could be a while before I'm seen. The lump is right underneath my nipple.

im just feeling worried as I already stupidly left it, and now I have even longer to wait for a referral!

im just feeling a little silly for not going to the Doctors when I found it :(

  • Hi [@Katiealice08]‍

It is only natural to feel anxious and wating to see someone is always the horrible part. We are all aware in our rational state of mind, that there are people worse off, that we understand the wait times so that everyone gets seen. But when it is happening in that moment to you, you just feel on edge and want it to happen right now and get answers right now.

When we find lumps and bumps that are not normally there of course our first instinct is to be worried and want to get it checked out, but there is also that feeling of ignoring it, hoping it's nothing serious and waiting to see if it goes away. We are very complex beings!

Because you had just had a baby, you would have seen changes in your breast, whether you breastfed or not, so even if you had gone to a doctor, there advice would have been to wait until your breasts had settled down again as at that point it is very hard to feel what should or souldn't be there.

I know this wait is going to be hard for you, but at least your are in the system and in line to be seen and will get answers. No need to feel silly though. Let us know when you get your appointment through and try to just concentrate on your little one for now and enjoy all the changes they are going through on a daily basis, it goes by so quickly.

    Hi Katiealice,

A very warm welcome to our forum. Most of us are referred via an urgent referral, which means that we should be seen within 2 weeks. If your GP has referred you via a non-urgent referral this could take longer. Did you tell your doctor that you noticed this 4 months ago? If not, it would be worth contacting her to find out what type of referral you've had. If this was non-urgent, she could change it to urgent.

Not all lumps are cancerous and, at your age it could be a benign cyst or fibrous thickening. However, you cannot rule out cancer totally, which is why your GP has referred you. We can all be wise after the event, so don't worry about leaving it so long. The important thing is that you're getting it seen to now.

I do hope that your appointment comes through soon and that nothing untoward is found. Please let us knoow how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi, thank you so much for replying!

Yes I told the doctor how long I've had the lump and she still said it would have to be a non - urgent referral which I suppose I should take as a good sign - but my anxiety doesn't seem to think so!
She said I may get rejected for an ultrasound as I don't fit the criteria of being over 30 and having a lump, but she said she'll ask the breast clinic to see me if this is the case.

Yeah she did make a point of mentioning my age, which again hopefully is on my side!
Thank you so much again for your kind words, I'll be sure to keep you updated!

  • My daughter had a similarly sized lump at a similar age and there was a non-cancer explanation. She felt very self-conscious at the breast clinic as everyone else was older.  If you develop other symptoms you can always go back to the GP and ask whether you need to be seen sooner. You could also phone a helpline like the one on this site. It is good that you are getting your lump checked out.

    Hi Katiealice,

If your GP already knows how long you've had it, she doesn't seem to think that there is any need for urgency, which is a good sign.

It is always just as well to be prepared for being dismissed without an ultrasound, due to your age. Many young people find that they really need to stand their ground to get a scan, so don't be afraid to do this if necessary.

  • Hi!

I just wanted to post an update as I've got an appointment on Monday! Can't believe how quickly they've got me in - really pleased it's not long to wait as it's currently 4am and I'm wide awake panicking!

Hopefully they'll offer me an ultrasound but I'll request one if not to be on the safe side!
    Thank you xx
