New moles appeared on Vulva

Hi All,

I'm 29 and I've had several marks/freckles/moles appear on my vulva (outer lips but marks are located on the inside) over the past few months. They're medium brow/tan in colour, flat, located all on the left and some are large and some are small. I've seen my GP and his diagnosis is that they're benign. However, I still have concerns and wonder whether it's worth getting a second opinion? I think my worry is that they're new and i just don't know how common it is to get freckles/moles there? I'm covered in freckles but never had any there. I'm also concerned that other options weren't considered, such as maybe a hormone imbalance causing them?

  • Hi,

I'm afraid I can't answer whether it's common to get moles or freckles on the vulva but I do know that it's not rare and it doesn't mean they will be cancerous. I do think though that you need to get a second opinion, if only to answer your question and for your peace of mind. If your GP practice has more than one GP, ask to see one of those, you are entitled to a second opinion. The other option is to pay to get a consultation at a private clinic if you can afford to.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Hi Angie,

Thanks so much for your advice and replying. I decided to think on it for a while but my GP called me out of the blue last week. He had discussed it with colleagues since and they advised to refer me to a specialist after deciding it's a bit unusual. I asked if it was just to be cautious, which he said it was.

I am a little nervous but the specialist asked for pictures so they may decide not to see me but a second opinion will be reassuring.

wishing you all the best X

  • Hi girls,

sorry been quiet! So had my surgery yesterday and wasn't as bad as I thought! Mild pain after lumpectomy but lots of painkillers to help!

Angie you're so right GP's have definitely been getting in trouble for scaring the life out of people!!!

hope you're both safe and well!

  • So glad you are recovering from your surgery. Crossing fingers that you aren't waiting too long for the results & they bring good news. xx

  • Hi! I've had a mole on my vulva for about 4 months now and the GP keeps on dismissing it and won't do anything about it, won't even refer me to a specialist. I've had more symptoms too + the mole and I am thinking of going private. I live in London and I'm not sure what kind of private I have to go to. Is it gynocologist or dermatologist or is it a special clinic? It would mean a lot if you can help me. Thank you so much xx

  • Hi Jo8,

I know your post is old but was just wondering what your results came back with regarding the biopsy

  • Hwllo

i was very very lucky for it to be benign but they said they were glad to get it off just incase!

  • I personally would say sign up to bupa and book through them! They were amazing with me!

  • Thanks for responding.

i wanted to ask, how many moles did you hsve appear?

Was it just one? I have my biopsy next week for several moles which I don't know if they are new or always been there.

i dont have any other symptoms ir signs

  • Hello!

I know this was from a few years ago, but just wondering how you got on? I’m in a similar situation. I have a few moles and I don’t know how long they’ve been there. One of them has become raised which made me notice, so I’m getting them checked. Hoping it’s nothing but Google is terrifying!

  • I’m in a similar situation as well, first noticed 1 mole about 2 years ago; saw my gp said it was fine. 2nd time, more moles but again said it was ok. 3rd time, more moles, finally referred me as non-urgent. Waited just over a year to see the hospital, they said they aren’t expecting cancer but referred me for an urgent biopsy just in case, which I’ve finally had today. I know I shouldn’t google, but I have, and am now terrified for the results.

  • Try not to worry until there’s something to worry about (and hopefully there isn’t). But Google is absolutely terrifying isn’t it. Are yours all flat, normal looking moles? I’m seeing my GP next week so I’ll see what she says. It’s the one that is now raised that is worrying me!
