2 week urgent referral

Hi, I had a routine smear test this morning and the nurse left half way through to talk to a doctor. She took more swabs as she wanted to be sure there wasn't an infection but I got a call this afternoon from the Doctor saying they're referring me to my local hospital for an urgent appointment. I'm absolutely terrified. I'm 29 and haven't had any other symptoms. What can I expect at the appointment? On my NHS app it says 2WW Suspected Gynological Cancer. Does that mean there is cancer there?

  • Hi Oddpoppet,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I am sorry to hear how your smear test went this morning, but try not to worry. Many people are recalled after routine smears and not all have cncer. The 'urgent appointment' is normal in these circumstances. You will normally be seen within 2 months, although it can be longer in some instances due to Covid. This is always a worry and, there are far too many unknowns for you to cope with.

Try to calm yourself down and tell yourself that 'it isn't cancer unil you're told that it is.' I am afraid that I am a breast cancer lady, so I cannot help with what you can expect at your appointment, so I hope that someone who has had this experience will be along t help you soon. You will normally be seen by a consultant who will talk to you about your symptoms, before examining you. S/he will then send you for scans to see if there is anything untoward present. If they find something, they may decide to take a biopsy of the area. It is only by having a biopsy that you can be sure whether or not there is any cancer present.

Unfortunately, it can take 1-3 weeks to get the biopsy results back and, this can be another scary time.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Here's hoping for good news.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
