Worried about Ent appointment

I'm a bit worried after going to the gp on Monday, I was meant to be going to get a tonsil stone removed, but my gp said it's not tonsil stones it's a polyp, he also said my tonsils are sunken, so has referred me to the Ent hospital, and said I need my tonsils out. I'm scared as I've already lost x4 members of my family to cancer, 3 of them in 2015 including my mom. My throat has been sore now for a good few months and occasionally get earache on that side,  I'm 41 and a smoker and I first noticed this white lump on my tonsil March last year so it's been there a while now, and can feel a lump in my neck. I'm so isolated none of my family lives close they're over an hour away, I'm so alone. Has anyone had this and it's not been the c word ?

  • Hi Kelx and welcome to Cancer Chat. It sounds like your ENT team have everything under control and as you are having both the polyp and your tonsils removed you should find that resolves the earache and sore throat.

Tonsil polyps are common and most of the time will be harmless and benign (not cancer) but often they are checked out and removed just to be on the safe side.

Try not to read too much into this for now and whilst I appreciate you wanting to hear other people's stories they may be very different to yours so it can be difficult to compare.

    Best wishes

  • Hi thank you for the reassurance, just worried because I have tested positive for hpv for 2 years now. I am trying not to stress like I was. Thank you x
