Worried that I may have tonsil cancer

Hi all.
I've been in a little bit of a frenzy today and I just wanted to post what I'm going though and see if anyone has experienced the same at all.

I'm 23 and a smoker (in the process of quitting due to these circumstances). Back in may I had a heavy night and smoked a lot of tobacco. For a few days my right tonsil was very tender and swollen so I avoided smoking for a little while and as far as I can remember it had gone down.

Over 4 weeks ago I had noticed that my tonsil had swelled agaim slightly but was causing me no pain or discomfort so I saw it as no cause for concern but 3 weeks ago I noticed a solid lump behind my right ear and instantly panicked. I phoned my doctor the same day and was invited in to have it looked at the same day.
She first thought it might be an ear infection as the lump was a swollen lymph node but I wasn't showing any symptoms of any sort of infection. I felt healthy and felt no pain or tenderness at all. Despite this she sent me away and recommended that I do all the usual stuff (gargle salt water, use throat numbing spray etc, aspirin- all of which haven't worked).  She advised me to book a new appointment after 4 weeks if either my lymph node or tonsil didn't go down. I unfortunately work in a call centre so I am on the phone all day 9-6:30 and it is beginning to become very uncomfortable to work with. I constantly feel like there is something sharp wedged in the right side of my throat, I've started to wheeze and become quite breathless and more recently I've been coughing quite frequently(not covid, I've been tested). Alongside all of this my lymph node keeps fluctuating in size, sometimes it is quite balbous and other times it shrinks right down but I can always feel it no matter the size. It has only been 3 weeks since I was first checked but my doctor agreed to let me come in today as niether have gone down and it is affecting my work. She concluded today that it's best that I be referred to ENT at the hospital and placed a lot of emphasis on the importance of looking after my well-being and health.
I know I may be over thinking this as I do tend to suffer with health anxiety but I have read that as a cause for concern. Equally concerning is the fact that I wasn't prescribed any antibiotics first which makes me feel that this is more than an infection.

I am just feeling very frustrated and lost right now because my symptoms all seem to bring me back to tonsil cancer which has spread to lymph nodes. I've been told there is a back log for ENT (and I'm sure everywhere else with Covid) and I will be waiting a minimum of 6 weeks to be seen.

Has anyone had the same symptoms/experience as me? I'd love to hear your experiences

  • Hello Sha123 and welcome to the forum.

I'm very sorry about the symptoms you've been cotending with and that they haven't gone away. I know this must be scary but it's good you've been referred as they'll be able to investigate in more detail and hopefully get to the bottom of this for you.

I'm sure some of our members who have been in a similar situation will be along soon to share their experiences and advice but in the meantime, we're sending our support your way and will have our fingers crossed you're not waiting too long for your ENT appointment.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderato

  • Thank you Steph! I appreciate your support.

jusr wanted to update as I've now discovered a black spot on the inside of my cheek which is another symptoms of oral cancer as far as I am aware. So if anyone has experienced this also , I'd appreciate hearing about your experiences with that too!

    thanks!
