Pain in breast, no lump- Referral refused

I've been experiencing pain in my right breast for 7 weeks now. It is there all the time but I can only feel it when it is touched. It's hard to pinpoint the exact are but I feel the pain from the side/middle.

I went to my GP 2 weeks after feeling the pain who checked me over and said she couldn't feel any lump and said it is likely to be hormonal. I went back 2 weeks later as the pain was still there and she checked me over again. Both my grandparents had breast cancer and I explained to her that I was extremely worried. She then wrote a letter to refer to the breast clinic but this was refused as I am 30 and pain doesn't usually suggest anything to worry about.

3 weeks later and the pain is still there and I worry about it every single day. I'm at a bit of a loss of what to do now?

I was on the mini pill but stopped taking this 3 weeks ago to see if that would make any difference but so far it hasn't.

I have thought about looking into private options and waiting back to hear about costs to see if this is an option.

Has anyone been in a similar situation or know private costs?

  • You should not have to put up with the worry, this alone can make you ill! Go back to your GP and request another referral, you should be (and have the right to be seen). If they do not suspect it is urgent, then the wait will be longer than the 2 week pathway-possibly 6-8 weeks.
Some private clinics offer a rapid accesss breast service

    (BMI Healthcare and Spire Health)

£150-250 for consultation and then u/sound or mammogram, if needed, approx another £300.
Do go back to your GP though, it will save a small fortune.

  • The referral was refused due to my age and because it is only pain and no lump.

I'm going to phone my GP again in the morning but just frustrated as I feel I'm getting nowhere due to my age!

  • Hello. A few months ago I had a lot of pain in my breasts too and was worried sick about it, my doctors couldn't feel any lumps either. They eventually did send me to the breast clinic who also found no lumps and said it was hormonal and due the stress I was under. You should definitely go back to your GP to be referred as you have a right to be seen especially with your family history. I hope everything goes well!
