New here and feeling anxious

Hi there. I am glad I found this chat as I can browse now and read other people's stories.
I noticed a mole in November 2020 and it was tiny. I never went to the gp as it never bothered me. It's now more than trebled in size, it's different colours, crusty, itchy and the other day I caught it a tiny bit and it bled. I called the gp and they wouldn't see me face to face! I had to have a phone appointment, waited 5 weeks for that for her to say I need to see it I said this is why I said can we just go straight to the face to face! 2 weeks wait for that! So after 7 weeks I'm referred and am told I'll be seen within 2 weeks, taking it to the 16th July. But they are so behind my appointment is still 2 weeks away! I assume they will removed my mole and I'll have to wait 2 more weeks for results. This is so much worry for me. I just hope it's a wart like my gp thinks it is after all this! Sorry it's long! Needed to get it off my chest! X

  • Hi,

You don't say how old you are? It's not uncommon for new moles to appear during adulthood but those that appear after the age of 40 are more likely to be worrying. Even so, if your new mole is changing so quickly it will be checked out by a dermatologist using a dermatascope. This shows them any change in the cells & they will then decide if it needs removing for a biopsy. If the cell structure is normal they will be happy it's benign. If they decide it needs removing it's rare that it's done on the day of the first appointment. It all depends on the size & location of the mole and whether the dermatologist has the facilities, time & staff to carry out the surgery. In most cases they arrange for the patient to return (usually within 2 weeks) as a day patient & have it removed under local anaesthetic. It will also require stitches as they remove a much wider area than just the mole. Results at the moment, due to Covid, are taking about 6 weeks I'm afraid.

It's such a pity that your GP didn't arrange for you to send photos first rather than wait so long for a face to face. However, the delay in it being checked out will hopefully have no detrimental effect on any investigation and treatment (if necessary). The waiting between appointments is the worst part so try and keep yourself busy & distracted. 75% of patients referred to dermatology are given a clean bill of health so crossing fingers that your mole is benign. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Thank you for your reply.

I am 37. It's located near my collarbone. Golly it sounds like I am in for a wait then. I have everything crossed it is nothing then! X

  • I also did send photos. I still had to wait that long ‍♀️ And then she said I couldn't really see from the photos so I need to see you. I just couldn't believe it! X
