Breast pain

Hi

I've had breast / chest pain for a good 18 months now, only on my left side.

I contacted my GP shortly after it started, Corona meant it was a phone consultation and I was told to take ibuprofen for a week to see if it improved.

It didn't really, but I felt like GP was not worried and so I left it for a while, around 6 months later when it still hurt I contacted GP again, and had an examination and was sent for an x-ray. X-ray came back clear and GP and nurse couldn't feel anything at examination.

Again I left it around 6 months, then called Benenden health for a second opinion from another GP, she asked if I'd had bloods (no), cardiogram (no). She said she would send a letter to GP encouraging them to refer me for those things, but again she didn't seem worried.

2 months later (now) and the pain is still there and it is making me so anxious. It varies in intensity, sometimes it isn't so much a pain as a "tightness" in the area, other times it spikes a bit and I also worry about my heart, because it feels like the pain sometimes comes from that region.

I feel like I am hitting a brick wall with the GPs, I've had to chase everything up or nothing happens, I try to tell myself that if they were worried they would refer me but I can't help feeling that I'm being let down, that because I'm still relatively young (33) I am not being taken seriously, and that they only listen to me reluctantly.

I suffer with anxiety already and sometimes lay awake for hours at night worrying about it. When I see my GP I often burst into tears because talking about it makes the anxiety bubble up.

I suppose wih this post I am looking for some reassurance or advice at how to proceed. I have sent an email to my GP today but usually they just reply with a "call and make an appointment" email...

  • Hi Hb88,

I'm sorry to hear of the difficulties you're experiencing. I can understand it's tough when you feel you're not getting answers.

Try to take some reassurance from the fact that the people you have seen so far don't seem too concerned - although if you're still having symptoms then of course you do need some answers or information about how to help the situation.

It's only a GP who can advise on this, so the only thing to really do is make another appointment to talk through your concerns. It may help to make some notes going into it so you can try not to let emotions get the better of you when you speak to the doctor, and you can communicate all the information you need to. If it helps and you don't want to see the same GP, you can always ask for a second opinion.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
