Found 4cm lump on thyroid

Hey guys...i have just joined. I found a lump in March just after my 2nd miscarriage (had 2 miscarriages within a year). Not sure if it's always been there but had a sore throat and noticed a lump at the front of my neck more to the left . Went to GP who thought it was a goiter and referred me to ENT and requested blood tests.

Bloods all came back fine. Has my first scan and confirmed it was a large lump approximately 3.9 x 2cm and covering my whole left thyroid. They classed it as U3 and also did a FNA. The biopsy results were inconclusive and advised me to get half of the thyroid removed. At the same time they put a camera down my throat to check my vocal cords and noticed I have significantly hypertrophied lingual tonsils. So they want to do a biopsy on the base of my tongue when I'm having my op too.

I have my operation booked in 2 weeks and really worried about the outcome. I have a 5 year girl which I need to explain what's going to be happening as she will see my scar and don't want her to be worried as she's super sensitive.

Once I've had my operation I'm assuming they will do a biopsy on my thyroid lump and go from there. Not really had much info about post operation.

I feel totally fine in myself but as you can imagine its all very worrying.

  • I had my full thyroid and over 50 lymph nodes removed a year and a half ago. I was in hospital for nearly a week, but that was mostly because of the lymph nodes being removed. Another woman was in the hospital getting her thyroid removed and I think she went home after two days. I took a month off work and after that, was really back to normal.

I know it is worrying but even the worst case scenario - thyroid cancer - isn't really as bad as you might be imagining. The worry is probably the worst of it!

  • Thankyou for your reply. It really does help to know people who have also gone through it too. Really appreciate it.
