Ovarian Cyst found on CT, missed on Ultrasound

I had a CT yesterday that diagnosed kidney stones (not fun) but it also found an ovarian cyst. Over the last 6 months, my IBS has gone nuts, I'm tired all the time, loss of appetite and a few other symptoms, my gp has been great, trying to figure out what's going on.

Just over a month ago, during a physical exam GP found a pain point on my right side, due to bloods at the time the concern was appendicitis so was sent to the hospital for surgical assessment, they did an pelvic ultrasound and I was told they found nothing. The right sided pelvic pain has continued, its a constant grumble. GP has continued to try and work thing out based on these findings.

Tuesday the kidney stones hit, went to A&E, got pain under control ish, then was back for surgical assessment yesterday (Wednesday). The kidney pain is on my left. To confirm the diagnosis I had a CT, yup kidney stones, but they also found an ovarian cyst on my right ovary. While this might explain the right sided pain, I'm worried that it wasn't picked up on the ultrasound, and that all they are planning to deal with it is another ultrasound in six weeks. No additional bloods. No referral to GYN.

My mum has had bowel cancer and breast cancer so I'm hyper aware of the possibility of cancer.

Am I over reacting in my worry???

  • Hello JJG84

I'm sorry to hear that you've been dealing with multiple health problems recently. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious about things.

It is possible that the cyst seen on the CT scan recently wasn't there when you had the ultrasound. Most ovarian cysts occur naturally and go away in a few months without needing any treatment so it's fairly common for women to have them monitored by ultrasound in the first instance. It also sounds reassuring that at this point the CT and ultrasound didn't raise any other areas of concern.

Given that you're feeling worried I'd suggest giving your GP a call. It sounds like your GP has been really supportive in trying to get things resolved for you and I'm sure they will be able to give you some further support and reassurance about the next steps.

I do hope that everything settles for you soon.

    Best wishes,
