Very frequent urge to go to the toilet

Hi there

I am in here on behalf of my husband who in the last 5 days has had a very quick change in bowel habits, like overnight.

he went from what he considered normal, to not feeling like he was completely emptying his bowels and in a lot of cases going to the toilet and nothing was coming out.

On Saturday he felt some relief on the evening after drinking a gut health drink all day and sorry for the description but said it was like a massive cow pat and he felt empty and so much better. Then on Sunday afternoon went back to the feeling of frequently feeling he needed the loo and has been like that since.

we have got some lactulose and that made his actually go when he needed to and now we have got some Cosmocol which again make him actually go, but he says not as normal as he normally does in size and he's going, or trying to go a few times a day.

he has no other symptoms, is still eating, no blood and no pain and says he feels fine in himself and has plenty of energy. He also isn't losing any weight.

he does suffer massively from health anxiety and I don't know whether this would have any implication on what is happening on his bowel movements.

I am worried sick as I am 20 weeks pregnant with our first child through IVF so please just after some insight from here.

thank you in advance.

  • Hello hevhev41

I'm sorry to hear that your husband is struggling with some changes to his bowel habits at the moment. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious but there could be many reasons for these changes and his anxiety levels could definitely be impacting things as well.

The most important thing is that he speaks with his GP for advice. they will be best placed to help get things back in good working order or arrange any further tests.

I do hope that things improve soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Jenn

Thank you for coming back to me.

He took the plunge this morning and went to the GP and they said it's very common this, but it's now been ongoing for a week with no relief, so feels a long time when he hasn't suffered with this previously.

He has done a FIT test which is causing extra worry now waiting for the results, but there was no obvious blood but you just never know.

We are both super worried, especially with the fact I'm pregnant and I'm so worried we are going to get teerrible news and I don't know how we will cope.
