Is this bowel/colon cancer?

Hi guys

I realise that I am talking to the general public here and not necessarily medical professionals so the answers will be guesswork, but I need some confirmation of what I 'THINK' I already know.

At the beginning of this year, my grandad had a bowel cancer screening home test kit (faecal immunochemical test or 'FIT' test) and this came back not normal and he was referred for a colonoscopy at the hospital.

Unfortunately due to ill health (he has COPD, Chronic kidney disease stage 3, Diabetes and heart failure) he could not attend this and was discharged.

One of the reasons we asked for this screening was due to him having very bad constipation and narrow stools.

He now has said he would rather not know what is wrong as ignorance is bliss and I accept his decision, but as his main carer I really would like some affirmation on this from anybody else who recognises these symptoms:

He now has a stabbing pain in his abdomen (like being stabbed with a knife) that has got progressively worse over the last month, originally it was intermittent but now it is constantly there all the time.

He has had dramatic weight loss over the last year (I am talking he has gone from 17 stone to 12 stone 5 lbs) and over the last 2 weeks he seems to be experiencing a lot of muscle wastage... It has been pretty dramatic and fast and he has loose skin everywhere.

The constipation has cleared up but he still has the narrow stools and also pale stools, they are never really normal brown colour.

The part that frightens me and makes me think this is cancer is that he has not lost his appetite whatsoever and is eating normal and drinking yet everyday he is losing weight. Also the pain in the abdomen concerns me.... But the part that makes me think maybe it isn't cancer is that he still has his appetite and he isn't really fatigued - I watched my grandmother die of lung cancer and I remember the loss of appetite and fatigue very well, she slept majority of the time.

I know that his wishes must be respected and I don't intend to relay anything I learn here but I guess I am just looking for other peoples perspectives... If this is potentially Cancer then I want to be as prepared as I can for when things take a downward turn.

Thank you everybody

  • Hello jpmerr2021 and welcome to the community.

I'm very sorry that your grandad has possibly been showing symptoms of bowel cancer and is unable to have further tests to clarify this. It must be very tough.

Hopefully some of our members will share their thoughts and experiences with you soon but in the meantime you may be able to get more information and advice from the charity Bowel Cancer UK. You can visit their website just here.

    Kind regards,
