Subungual Melanoma

I'm wondering if there's anyone who's had experiences with subungual melanoma who could tell me if I need to push for answers.

Before Christmas I experienced discomfort around my nail on my big toe and this eventually led to some sort of flare up in April which saw the bottom of my nail swell up and blister, with pain so bad that I couldn't walk. I saw a nurse at the time and referred myself to podiatry. I spoke with podiatry on the 4th of May and the person I spoke to suggested I'd need nail surgery and to wait for correspondence arranging an appointment for me to go in to show them my nail in person. I've still not heard anything but have since developed more pigementation on my nail. My nail is split into 3 sections all of which are different shades of brown and over the past few weeks I've developed a dark brown/black area of the nail which is visibly spreading across the nail. I can't find any good information online about what it could be.

  • Hi Lucy,

If you search 'subungual' in the Search Forum bar at the top of the page it will bring you all the posts regarding this subject.

Your nail doesn't follow the usual route of a SM - usually the painless mark or line would appear first and could be there for a long time (if not looked at) before the nail became painful & presented other symptoms.

Having said all that, I think you need to contact someone about it as it's evolving quickly. Is Podiatry at your GP's surgery or at the hospital? If it's at the GP surgery I would speak to your GP as it may require a referral to Dermatology. If Podiatry is at the hospital, give them a ring & explain the changes and that you are worried it may be something serious that needs checking asap.

I hope you get it checked out quickly. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (superficial spreading melanoma patient)
