Mole worries

Hi guys,

I recently went to the doctors over two moles I was concerned about and then was sent for a dermascope appointment at a clinic. Had that done and then within a couple of weeks my GP rang because he was worried about the results and didn't want me to receive a scary letter without an explanation.

The results said that the moles are severely atypical and they look like melanoma. So, I've been given an 2 week wait appointment for next Friday at the hospital with a specialist dermatologist. Nothing else has been explained so I wondered what I can expect at the hospital??

Also, one of the moles I was worried about actually bleed, scabbed and fell off so how can they actually look at it if it is not there anymore??

  • Hi,

Did they not mention that they would want to remove your dysplastic moles? They should really have told you, as severely dysplastic moles are usually removed before they can become malignant. It sounds like your GP has received their copy of the notes before you have received your appointment letter and it's good that the GP has given you a heads up, especially if you weren't expecting it.

If the appointment you've received doesn't mention surgery then I think it may be a pre-op appointment to arrange attendance on another day for the moles to be removed. If you have a telephone number to call, give them a ring and ask them if it's for surgery so you know. If one of the moles has disappeared, they will have to rely on their notes as to what they examined at your last appointment. Do you have any photos of the mole? If so, take them with you as they will help. They will probably excise the tissue in that area of the missing mole to ensure that no cells were left behind.

Good luck & hopefully, although severely dysplastic, they have been caught early and hadn't yet turned into full blown melanoma. Please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)
