Anaesthesia

Is there anyone on here that is overweight with high blood pressure that had a hysterectomy, I'm getting myself in a terrible state as I might have to have this done and terrified of complications.

    Hi Patricia,

There is no point in getting in a state as this will only increase your blood pressure further. Your surgeon would not put you forward for surgery if s/he were worried about this. They also work closely with an anaethetist who will be used to dealing with people who are overweight.

I have not had a hysterectomy but I have had a lumpectomy, followed by a double mastectomy the following year and had 2 knees replaced 4 years after that. I was overweight and have very high blood pressure and had a general anaesthetic on all occasions.

You will have a pre-med prior to your operation. Here a nurse will assess whether or not you are suitable to operate on. If there is any question about this, it will be discussed by your care team prior to surgery and a suitable plan drawn up. It sounds as if you're meeting yourself coming back at present. Try to calm down and put your faith in your care team. who do this every day.

Have you got a date for surgery yet? Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Not yet, its all a bit up in the air at the moment, I was going to have it done on Tuesday next week but when I went to see her on Friday she said she was quite happy to leave it until August as there was no immediate urgency, she also wants me to lose some more weight and belly fat. Thankyou for replying.

    Hi Patricia,

It is good to hear that your surgeon doesn't see any need for urgency. Have you any plan for losing weight in the meantime? I know that it's not easy.

I put on a lot of weight after my cancer treatment and it took me some time to feel well enough to lose weight. I eventually managed to lose 6 stones with sensible eating (not dieting) and exercise. So far I have managed to keep this down for 2 years and I feel so much better.

I hope that you are successful in your quest.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi, thanks for your reply. I have started on a low carb diet and am beginning an exercise program, I need to get rid of belly fat. I'm finding it very hard at the moment to keep positive and motivated but all of a sudden I get all these gloomy thoughts in my head and I just want to hide myself away. I know it sounds like I'm feeling sorry for myself but I'm just finding it hard to cope with these awful feelings of anxiety and depression and this awful fear of surgery. Thank you for replying

    Hi Patricia,

The way you are feeling is familiar to many  of us here. It is normal to feel depressed, anxious and fearful at this stage. Fear of the unknown is a big thing too. You will feel so much better once you get your surgery behind you.

Remember that your Care team do this every day and are experts in this field. Have you thought of asking your GP for something to help soothe your nerves at present? This can be a huge help for a short while.

I hope that all goes well with your diet and exercise program.

    Kind regards,

  • I'm trying to keep calm by keeping myself busy but its not really working. I'm still panicking about my weight, blood pressure and diabetes affecting the surgery. My family are all getting fed up with me stressing and I feel so down, just don't know where to turn.

    Thanks for replying

    Hi Patricia,

It sounds as if you need to have a chat with your GP to see if s/he can hel,p either with medication or counselling. Many of us have to resort to these to get us through. Try to remember that your care team do these procedures day in day out and, with so much of the population being overweight, having Diabetes and Hypertension, they are used to dealing with these challenges without encountering any problems.Put your faith in them and you will get through this.

You are trying to do something about your weight. Stressing so much about complications that are most unlikely to happen, will only increase your Hypertension and sugar levels. REducing these will also help you to get through your surgery without event.

    Kind regards,
