Hi everyone, I'm sure that this has been answered somewhere else and there has been alot of helpful information but I just wanted to find out a bit more about peoples experiences post surgery. About a month ago an ultrasound and biopsy led to a discovery of a 2-3cm nodule which has come back showing follicular cells. The surgeon however has said that although a great sample, they cannot determine what the full picture of the cells is unless they remove half of my thyroid. I have already been in for my pre op assessment and am booked in for surgery in the next couple of weeks... although this has come as a bit of a shock, I just think honestly listen to your body- it knows when something is off.
Just had a few questions with regards to post surgery
- how often do you get your thyroid levels checked?
- do you get your calcium levels checked regularly also and if so how often?
- anyone that had hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid for about 11 years) prior to surgery, and how has that been for you post surgery? My surgeon has told me chances are that they will up my medication by 25mg but I'm worried that with how sluggish and slowed down I already felt over the years with this (brain fog also) this may knock me for six even more so!
- what happens on the day of surgery? do they do more scans of your thyroid?
- I am worried about metastatis (if it is possibly cancer) and would my surgeon possibly do a scan of my neck/lungs PRIOR to surgery or isit routine for it to take place POST surgery if they know that it is cancer?
- Am I able to request pictures of my ultrasound to see where the nodule is located (I'm just curious)
- Has anybody had issues with the back of the throat and flare ups (ulcer and random spot that appears and reappears there)
More than anything I am intrigued about life post surgery... I was due to move abroad this year but feels like life has taken a different turn and one which I wasn't prepared for.......
Sorry for all the questions- I go from not wanting to know to wanting to know the ins and outs of this experience!
