Bilateral ovarian dermoid cysts

Hi everyone,

I wanted to start a post/thread on this and will continue to update in the hope that it may provide some help to others (just knowing that there are others going through the same thing may bring some comfort).

I'm 32 and originally called my GP as I was worried that I was experiencing many symptoms similar to those of a very early menopause.  Although my menstrual cycle was, on average, getting longer (approx 39 days), it was also becoming way more painful than I had ever experienced.  She referred me for a transvaginal ultrasound scan which showed up two  demoid cysts, one on each ovary.  Having reviewed the report with the GP, she also told me that one is 3.5cm and the other is 4.5cm.

I'm now bring referred to a gynaecologist to discuss my options and hope to have this appointment booked soon.  I also have been told that I'll need a number of blood tests and may need additional scans hopefully to rule out the possibility that these cysts are malignant (which is probably most likely as most dermoid cysts are benign tumours).

Naturally, I am concerned but in many ways hoping that we've found the root cause of some of the pain and other symptoms I have been experience with my menstrual cycle so that we can work on a treatment plan.  For others that have or have had dermoid cysts, did you ever experience excruiciating pain - sharp bursts of pain rather than a dull pain?  And for those that have had them removed, did it clear any of the symptoms that you originally discussed with your doctors?

I'll keep this updated as I go as I have more questions than answers right now.

  • Hi Suwaii and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry about the cysts that have been found but fingers crossed you won't have to wait too long until you can discuss your options with your gyanecologist and find out what happens next.

Hopefully some of our members who have contended with dermoid cysts will get back to you soon but in the meantime, do feel free to join in on any discussions you find about this when using the 'search forum' option in the purple bar above.

I hope your blood tests and scans go well and I look forward to reading your next update.

    Kind regards,
