Why won't the consultant do an endoscopy? So stressed!

Hi all, I'e been suffering from pressure/indigestion pain in my upper GI tract for some 9 months. Some reflux and CONSTANT burping (at a considerable volume - nothing like a regular burp pre-symptoms) and generally feel continual burning, discomfort and pain around my throat going down towards my sternum.

I was referred to Gastro and the consultant offered me either a barium swallow endoscopy, I optd for Barium ad he said it would give the most comprehensive results. It came back normal. I then had 24hr PH monitoring and motility done - again normal. These tests weren' a typical day as I' been NBM before they were done and my problems are at their worst after food and drink.

The consultant has discharged me and won' do an endoscopy to check the condition of my esophagus. I'e read a lot on the fact that different things can be seen on Barium Swallow tests and Endoscopy- so why wont they do this for me? I'm not even 40 and am really finding the discomfort unbearable especially trying to care for 2 children and be my usual, happy self.

I think the consultant has suggested I be referred to ENT but I strongly feel this is a digestive thing.            Anyone have any thoughts on this?  Thanks so much in advance

  • It's good news that the Barium test and PH monitoring were normal. I don't know if endoscopy would show different things, sorry.

Are you taking any digestion remedies such as Gaviscon or Omeprazole that counteract symptoms of acid reflux, burping and discomfort that you describe? If you feel it's to do with your digestion, have you considered asking to see a dietitian?

Those are my thoughts but I'm not medically trained. I have experienced similar symptoms, post surgery, and Gaviscon has been a big relief.

I hope you get a good resolution soon.

    Best wishes.
