Nipple discharge

Hi I'm new to this forum.  I've just started having a discharge from my left breast.  It is orange-yellow in colour.  I've spoken to my GP (telephone appointment) who is going to refer me to my local hospital breast care clinic.  Can anyone advise me of any outcomes you have had with this sort of issue as I'm worried sick about what they will find.  I had a mammogram only 3 months ago which was clear, I have no lumps or any other symptoms.  It doesn't help that appointments may be delayed due to the pandemic so I may not find out for a while.

    Hi MummyH,

A very warm welcome to our forum. I am sorry to hear about your symptoms. You are doing the right thing in getting his checked out. You will usually be seen at the breast clinic within 2 weeks. Normally you will have a mammogram, ultrasound and possibly a biopsy when you attend. It normally takes 1-2 weeks to get the results of these tests back. It is impossible to predict what your outcome will be. The only way to be sure is to have the tests mentioned to find out if there is a malignancy or it is benign.

This is always a scary time. Try to keep yourself busy to help the waiting time to pass. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks Jolamine for your reply.  I now have an appointment in a few days time so am really hoping to get an answer soon.  You're right the waiting is the hardest thing.  I feel like I've had a stressful few years with the death of a parent due to cancer and caring for other family members who have been ill as well as coping with my husband going through 2 rounds of redundancy.  I was really hoping that my 7 years bad luck was over but am wondering if all the stress has finally taken its toll on my health.  I am fearing the worst.

    Hi MummyH,

I am so sorry to hear about the hard time you've gone through. We had one like this a couple of years ago, when we lost 7 relatives and 2 close friends in the one year. This included both of my parents-in-law and my husband's youngest brother. We had cared for my mother-in-law at home for 8 years. The same year my son broke his neck and my hubby was diagnosed with heart failure. I know how hard it all is, so I'm not surprised that you are stressed out. It is difficult to find employment at present, but I hope that your husband has been successful.

We all tend to fear the worst at this stage, but I sincerely hope that you are wrong. I am glad to hear that your appointment is soon, as irrespective of the outcome, you will feel better once you know what you are dealing with. Even if the worst comes to pass, breast cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer nowadays. I have had 2 bouts in the past 12 years and I still live a busy and fulfilled life.

Please keep in touch and let us know how your appointment goes and, remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolaine xx

  • Wow it sounds like you have been through a lot!  You sound so positive too.  Thanks so much for your reassurance regarding breast cancer treatment.  I will let you know how I get on next week.  Fingers crossed xx

    Hi MummyH,

Yes, I have been through a lot and I can't say that it was all easy, but I have come out the other side and, I'm sure that you will too.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for good news and, look forward to hearing how you fare next week.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

Thankfully I got the all clear.  No lumps were found and I was told that this sort of discharge can be very common.  They couldn't do a mammogram as it was too soon after my last one so they did an ultrasound instead.  That too didn't show anything suspicious so I was discharged.  I asked what had caused it and was told it is usually hormones or an infection.  I wasn't offered any antibiotics or given advice on how to manage it.

    Hi MummyH,

Thank you for the update. I am delighted to hear that nothing untoward was found and you have been discharged with a clean bill of health. I understand that discharge due to hormonal changes can be quite common. Are you still having some discharge? If so, please make an appointment to see your GP to see what they think.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
