Heavy bleeding between periods

Hi,

I've been dealing with irregular periods for almost a year now and although my cycle has occasionally varied in length before, it's never been to this extent. It's also worth mentioning that I'm currently 29 and hoping to try for a baby soon.

The issue with my periods began with me having a much lighter flow than usual (more like spotting), then I missed my period for a few months and now I've been bleeding for almost three months on and off - usually a few days in between at the most. I have also bled a couple of times after sex.

In an attempt to rule out anything serious I got in touch with my local GP in January, but I still haven't got any solid answers.

I was referred for three lots of blood tests earlier this year, where everything came back normal aside from my liver function. I also had a vaginal swab which came back normal.

Because my liver enzymes were abnormal two blood tests in a row, this became the focus of my telephone discussions with the nurse and I was referred for an ultrasound. This has since helped to diagnose an issue unrelated to my periods, but I haven't been given much information at all about what could be causing problems with my cycle aside from a potential lifestyle or stress related issue.

I called back again about my periods (which had become much heavier at this point) and was given a telephone appointment with the same nurse who told me that the only option she has is to put me on the pill and hope that it helps to regulate my periods.

I explained that I ideally don't want to take the pill as I'd like to try for a baby, and I'm also not sure if it'll help me in the long term if there is an underlying problem.

Long story short, they haven't offered me any more support other than to write a prescription for the contraceptive pill and explain that my situation isn't classed as urgent despite contacting them in January.

I'm a bit worried that they just think I'm trying to talk my way into getting help with fertility, which isn't the case, and haven't considered this as an overall health concern.

It's worth noting that the bleeding I've had has caused minor discomfort, similar to normal period pains, and I've explained to the nurse about feeling weak because of the length of time that I've been bleeding.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with bleeding and could you offer any advice about regulating periods, or anything else I could ask my GP to help me with?

I'm due for my next cervical smear in April next year and they've told me they don't think I need to be referred for another one until then as my last came back normal.

It's becoming so frustrating and I haven't really got anyone to turn to because my local GP feels that they have done all they can to help.

If anyone else has a similar experience I would really appreciate your help!

  • Hi SJ

it's horrible to say it, but I think it's one of those issues yet again where women's issues with abnormal bleeding just get totally minimised and dismissed. It becomes such a fight to get taken seriously, esp when young and pre menopausal - trust me I've been there!

obviously it isn't right that you are experiencing the issues that you are, and so my advice would be not to get fobbed off. It probably isn't anything serious but whenever I have had issues with bleeding I have always been referred for an ultrasound at the very least to see what is going on inside the womb.  It might be that you have fibroids/polyps or something else causing the unusual bleeding and they should be checking that out.

So if I were you I would insist on a GP referral rather than the nurse and insist that they refer you for an ultrasound to work out the cause of the abnormal bleeding.

    hope that helps x
