Skin cancer-help

Hey everyone,

my husband had a mole on his back that was 'normal' and then it suddenly had a black mole on top that grew and covered the initial mole - we noticed it just about two months ago - I eventually made him contact the doctor and the doctor took a look and said he thought it was nothing to worry about but referred him to the dermatologist; a week later he had a call to attend the dermatology department to have a photo - a week later he had a call to attend the dermatology department to have it removed and was told his results would be back In 2-4 weeks - he then had a text appointment for an appointment (Two weeks after the removal) for the following Monday along with a letter for an appointment for an X-ray the week after.... I have searched the consultants name and they are a skin cancer consultant.... we are terrified and so worried. No one has actually spoken to us so we are in the dark a bit. Would appreciate some stories of similar situations?

  • Hi,

I'm sorry you are both going through this worry, especially when everything is being done remotely & you could really do with speaking to someone. I'm assuming the appointment is for tomorrow? If so, everything will be explained then but my hunch is that the mole is possibly cancerous and that's why he's also being sent for an X ray (is it a CT scan)?

The good thing is that, if it is malignant, it was removed pretty quickly (I know 2 months will seem like it's been left late but there are people with skin cancer who left theirs for a year or more & have been successfully treated, me being one of them).

If it is malignant, they will want to do another excision to take a wider amount of tissue around the area - this is a belt and braces procedure to ensure they find any stray cell that may have broken away. The X ray/scan will be to check his torso for anything that looks suspicious. Many patients that go through this get clear results from both procedures so try not to panic.

They should be able to tell your husband what the depth of the mole was and this is important as it tells them what stage he is - a shallow depth means it's early stage - it was caught quickly before it could do any or very little damage & surgery may be the only treatment he needs to deal with it.

I hope the appointment is tomorrow so that you don't have too long to wait for the diagnosis. If it's a week tomorrow, it may be worth your husband ringing the consultant's secretary and asking to speak to someone as receiving the X ray appointment without knowing the results is making him very anxious.

Good luck and please try not to panic. He is being dealt with quickly and that's good. Hopefully it's been caught early stage and everything will go well. Please let us know how he gets on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)
