Waiting game

Hi, I'm really new to this so please bear with me. I'm nearly 42 and I got diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis approx 7 years ago. Skip forward to sept 2019 and Sept 2020 where I had a lump in my left armpit and was referred by my GP for a mammogram both times, and the appointment in Sept 2020 I also had a core biopsy. The results came back all clear. From September to approx April this year I had an enlarged lymph node in the right side of my neck/face I didn't think anything of it and put it down to infection or inflammatory issues. I had a rheumatology appointment back in April 2021, where my consultant wasn't happy with my progress and she asked for me to have a full complete blood count and referred me to have a CT/PET scan, which again I was absolutely fine about. Towards the end of May i received a telephone call from my RA nurse who had stated I needed a biopsy on the right side of my neck. I had been fastracked and two days later I was at a ENT appointment awaiting to have a biopsy on my enlarged lymph node. When I was at this appointment I had and ultrasound scan and the consultant decided that it would be best if I had an excision of my lymph node above my collarbone. I was also told that there were several other lymph nodes raised in my neck. Again I was fastracked for this operation and had it on 11th June. I have received my follow up letter today from ENT for a telephone consultation on 28th June.

I suppose what I am asking really is has anyone else had two separate biopsies before? The Breast biopsy came back clear, and obviously I'm awaiting the results of the excision of the lymph node. Im just wondering could I have been misdiagnosed last time for everything this time to have been escalated so quickly! And has anyone else ever experienced anything similar before? Sorry for the long post and thank you in advance.

  • Hi there  :)

Parts of this post feel very similar to whathas happenened to me, although nothing including a mammogram etc. Long story short, towwards the end of 2019 I had noticed a swelling around the collarbone which I ignored and put down a possible strain. Soon after I noticed a few lumps at the top of my neck so I went to the GP, who after examining my neck, collarbone and armpit told me I had enlarged lymph glands, which was caused by either an infection or cancer. I had various tests afterwards including an ENT examination, PET CT scan and biopsy and around 6 weeks later I had a phone call asking me to come into one of the hospitals to speak to me face to face, which I already knew what was going to happen. At the meeting, I was told that I have stage 4 Hodgkins Lymphoma, cancer of the lymph glands.

I'm glad that you are on the path to finding out what is going on and I really hope that what you're going through is nothing serious. I was told when I was given the diagnosis that the type of cancer I have been living with is highly curable with a success rate of over 80% so there is some positvity, however each patient reacts to different treatments in different ways, and sadly I had to endure spending most of 2020 in and out of hospitals having 3 different types of chemo leading to get me to remission allowing me to have a 3week stay in a London hospital where I had a further week long course of a 4th type of chemo followed by a stem cell transplant.

Whilst I have said parts of your post sound very familiar, please bear in mind I'm not saying you hav cancer as I can't tell you that, and fingers crossed for you that it's not.

Keep your chin up, stay strong, and feel free to get in touch if you want someone to talk to

    Best wishes

    Tim
