Melanoma

So having had two suspicious moles removed and biopsies previously I know what is normal and what is not, but recently had a strange mark appear on myy arm. It was slightly indented, brown and perfectly circular with a darker mark in the middle which was an odd shape. Within days it had changed, the darker centre turned into a small lump and had different colours in it. I called the GP and sent photos. They told me to send another two over a period of two weeks. The next day, it flaked and came off and has left a white area with a red mark in the middle which is an odd shape. I sent this to the GP who said it is not too concerning and to send a photo again next week.

Last time they waited two weeks they referred to dermatology on a normal basis, not priority, and I was called within days to go in and have it removed. They said it should have been urgent and makred the biopsy as urgent as they thought it was melanoma. It wasn't that time, but I am so concerned this time and the doctor is doing the same. Has anyone had a melanoma present like this?

Thank you

  • Hi,

I can't say that I've heard of melanoma presenting like this and I know many melanoma patients & have had it myself for many years.

A new mole/lesion can appear and then disappear again but it doesn't usually leave any mark behind, however, I'm sure your GP will be monitoring this via your photos. If they become concerned but not enough to refer you, they may send the photos to dermatology to get their advice. If the GP doesn't suggest this next time you speak to them, please ask if it can be done. It may then negate you having to see them in person but you will still get an expert's opinion.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)

  • Hi Angie,

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me. It is very strange it has done this - not seen anything like it before hence thinking it could be something sinister given I've just had another one removed now and another a few years ago. I think I will insist they ask dermatology for their opinion as last time they should have done this sooner!

Thank you so much again - will see on Friday about the referral. Hope you're doing well, sending best wishes.

  • Hi. I just wanted to say a few years back I had a mole removed that was pink in the middle with a white ring around. It was biopsied and came back absolutely fine, they told me it was known as a halo mole. If I were you I'd  still have it checked over by dematology just to be sure but apparently halo moles aren't harmful x

  • I don't think this sounds like a halo mole as it's evolved differently to the usual halo mole. Hopefully Poppies appointment has gone well today.
