Need a punch biopsy on a mole on my face

Hi I am new here I have a large mole on my face that I have had for about 3 years I have bee to see the dermatology team today who identified different colors in it so refering me for a biopsy I am really concerned anyone anything similar

  • Hi Janeki,

There are many people on the forum who have had biopsies done on their moles, only a few on the face as far as I can remember. Many of them (about 75%) come back benign so although it's a worrying time for you it will hopefully come back non malignant.

They will do a punch biopsy because this leaves a much smaller scar that should heal well & be hardly visible in time. If the results show malignancy, they will then do a Wide Local Excision which is a larger procedure to ensure they take a margin of tissue from around the mole. They don't usually do this at the outset because they want to prevent causing a larger facial scar if the patient's biopsy shows it's not cancerous.

I hope this helps. Try to keep yourself distracted until you've had the surgery & get the results. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
