Hospital contaminated my smear sample.

I am new  to the forum. I am 48, I am post menopause. I have one son aged 18 and another son  who died at 8 months, I haven't  given birth both were c sections.

I have had an horrendous history of unsuccessful smear tests, with multiple  health professionals, I suffered sexual  abuse as a child.

I had a smear and ablation done, three years ago under general  anaesthetic.

Anyway I started experiencing  post menopausal bleeding. I was offered an hysterscopy and smear under spinal block, as the gynae doctor failed to obtain a smear biopsies and hysterscopy without general anaesthetic

I had to go for covid tests, 2 negative tests were  required, self isolating. The  taxi was very expensive. I have psoriatic arthritis (similar to rheumatoid arthritis) fibromyalgia, high blood pressure  diabetes and brittle asthma.

Anyway day of the  operation, I was very unwell as most of my tablets were stopped, I was fasting  a long  time, I was severely  dehydrated, which affects  the arthritis and diabetes.

I went through spinal block, it lasted three times longer than "normal" people, you are completely paralysed  for hours!

I was previously diagnosed with complex hyperplasia  with atypical,  my grandmother mother died of  uterine cancer.

Anyway I got home from the hospural, the standard  of care from  all health  professionals was extremely high. I had an horrendous time with the spinal block, however I said to myself, put it all behind  ne and  move on.

A Nurse from gynae ward rung me to say, she was sorry but they contaminated my smear sample. I would need to repeat  the test again. I don't know what the hospital will do  as the nurse thst rang said sure, you can just pop in and get a wee test.

Sorry fof the long rant but I am so angry with whoever messed up.my sample.

Sorry if I have put this in the wrong section.

  • Hello BrethrenWoman1972

I'm so sorry to hear about what has happened recently with your test samples. It was obviously an ordeal just for you to be able to undergo the investigations and for there to have then been a mishap with the samples, I think most people reading your post would understand your frustration and anger.

I do hope that the hospital is able to get things sorted for you as quickly and smoothly as possible. If you want to raise your concerns or need some support with getting this resolved I'd suggest contacting the hospital PALS department.

I hope that you have some news and reassurance soon.

    Best wishes,

  • I lodged a formal complaint  against  the hospital,.

Yesterday they sent a letter, with an appointment to attend a routine appointment  with  a nurse  for a smear with no arrangements  for any kind of pain relief. I am very annoyed as I explained  to the Nurse who phoned me, about contaminating my  my sample.

I wrote  to the gynae  secretary  to ask to pass an e-  mail onto the consultant.

There was not even a letter of apology  with the appointment  letter. I do not know how they think that they can get away with treating people like this.
