Sigmoidoscopy worry

Hey i was wondering if anyone had anything similar, im 22 & suffer from very lose bowel movements at least once a a day, sometimes i get really bad flare ups where i'm on the toilet up to 11 times a day! no blood, no weight loss, or stomach pains just a very bad toilet habit. i've been tested for coeliac and am awaiting results and i've also had samples taken, which have shown high levels of inflammation, so i'm booked in for a sigmoidoscopy on july 1st, but i am petrified that this could be cancer.

has anyone else been through a similar thing?

  • Hi,

whilst cancer is always a possible diagnosis there are many more other reasons for your issues. You're young so chances of bowel cancer are very low. It could be IBS, IBD, polyps and even infection causing your issues. Try not to worry too much I know it's easier said than done! At least you are getting it checked and will know soon but it's a very very low chance you have cancer.

    good luck!

  • Hi!

I had a sigmoidoscopy back in early 2020. I was really worried that it was cancer but it was just some totally benign polyps.

The procedure is totally painless, quick, simple and you should get to speak to the Dr after the procedure who will tell you what they found.

As the other commenter mentioned, being young, the risk of bowel cancer is super small but getting it checked it sensible. Removing my polyps sorted all my bowel problems out instantly.

  • Hey - don't worry!

sounds like you will be getting a diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease soon! I have the same condition for the last 6 years. Chances of cancer are slim to nothing. Just focus on getting the flexi sig done and make sure your consultant starts you on a 5 ASA or biologic medication to keep your condition in check as well as prescribing steroids to stop the inflammation.

all the best! Everything will be ok!
