Hi All,
I had a lump removed from my tongue just under two weeks ago, it was sent off for testing and I'm just waiting to hear when I can go in and receive my results.
A bit of back story, I've had trouble with my tongue since December 2020 when I spoke to a doctor and sent pictures (couldn't see in person because of covid) of a very swollen and sore tongue on the left side. There was also a sore there which I assumed was from my swollen tongue rubbing on my teeth. I have an underactive thyroid and when it's playing up or my medication needs adjusting my tongue often swells until the problem is fixed. I had full bloods done and it was found my thyroid levels were out so my medication was increased. Problem solved!!! However my tongue remained swollen for the next few months and last month it started to cause me pain in my throat and ear and then one morning when brushing my teeth the sore that had never gone away started to bleed.
I went to the doctors straight away (again over the phone but he did agree to see me) he notice my glands were swollen and there was a small halo ulcer on the left of my tongue. I was sent as a two week wait referral to the maxi facial clinic for assessment. That appointment was just under two weeks ago. At my appointment the doctor examined me and said my lingual tonsils were swollen and I told him about the ear pain I was getting and how sometimes I find it slightly difficult to swallow.
In all honesty he didn't seem that concerned but insisted on a biopsy the following morning and for me to remain on the urgent two week wait list for my biopsy results. He also said if it is cancer we've got it early! (I was slightly alarmed by this comment as he didn't seem too concerned 2 minutes previous)
Anyway the entire lump was removed from the left side of my tongue ( the pain from this was terrible and has only just become more bearable!!)
Because the pain in my tongue is less now I've started to feel the pain at the back of my tongue again which I assume are where your lingual tonsils are? I've also just looked in the mirror and my left tonsil (same side as the tongue lump) is slightly bigger than the right.
My concern is that they have removed a lump from my tongue and sent it off for biopsy and the actual issue is with my lingual tonsils at the back of my tongue and my lump was just traumatic pain from the swelling and rubbing on my teeth?
Is it possible to have a lump on your tongue and it actually be something sinister with your tonsils?
I'm just a bit concerned that the wrong area has actually been sent off for biopsy.
I'm 38 and a none smoker/drinker and they didn't seem that concerned by the lump when it was removed in the clinic either.
Any advice or personal experience is most welcome! I hate this two week wait!
