Electric shock during colonoscopy. Anyone else have this?

I had my second colonoscopy yesterday. My first was uncomfortable, and I coped well with Entinox. However, yesterday was a different story. I had opted for the Entinox again, but it was far more painful this time. They removed 4 polyps, and performed a series of biopsies too. The first polyp was going to be removed with a hot snare, but every time they closed the snare, I got an electric shock in my abdomen. Someone was called in and checked everything, but no cause was found. They had used it on the previous patient with no problems. The clinician said he'd never come across it before. Needless to say, a cold snare was used after that.

The worst pain was caused by the amount of air that had to be introduced to get access to the polyps. The procedure was an hour or so. I found the Entinox useful some of the time, but not at others. Trying to get rid of the air made me retch. I was not embarrassed to pass wind: it was beyond my control. I can honestly say that this was the most pain I've felt since giving birth, (but it was not on the same level.)

Nobody seems to know why I received electric shocks, and I would be interested to know if anyone else has had a similar experience.

I would definitely opt for sedation next time, although I'm concerned about the amount of people looking for general anesthesia.

  • Welcome to the forum Mjmulvany although I'm sorry about what happened during your colonoscopy.

Unfortunately I haven't come across any posts that have mentioned this but I'm sure that if any of our members have had a similar experience they'll get back to you soon.
