Peri menopause or something more sinister?

I'm 50, overweight at 13 and a half stone and 167cm tall.  Been told I need HRT but can't due to unstable heart condition.  Everything at moment seems to be blamed on peri menopause but I'm not sure... Dr says I'm dangerously anaemic at 103 and B12 deficient.

Six months ago I began having extremely heavy periods - I mean gushing & horrendous. Nothing keeps you dry so I stay close to home if I can.  Thankfully these extreme days last no more than 4 days but more and more after this heavy bleed brown old blood discharge for days sometimes weeks after.  Not had brown yuck stuff since had last child 17 years ago. Waiting for scan but huge waiting list? Should I pay and go private to see gynaecologist? Could it be something scary? My sister had to have emergency  radical hysterectomy due to pre- cancer of the womb & cervix when she was 46.  Am I being paranoid? Should I just wait for scan ? Anyone else my age experienced this ?

  • Hi Rebie,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sure the uncertainty around this and the waiting must be difficult. I would imagine that if your doctor was especially concerned then they would have put you forward for an urgent referral and a quicker appointment time. However if you have any concerns I would suggest speaking to your doctor again for further information/guidance or reassurance.

The question about whether to go private is really up to you and what makes you most comfortable.

If you feel you'd like to talk things through at all, our nurses are available on 0808 800 4040 (Monday-Friday, 9-5).

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
