More waiting - large polyp found in rectum. Needs removing

My other half had a flexi sigmoidoscopy this week, which showed a large polyp in the rectum. It is not bleeding. Unfortunately, it was too large to remove at the time, so he needs to have surgery. The surgeon said that the polyp looks benign, but obviously, he can't be sure until it has been removed and sent for analysis.
So, my partner is now waiting for an urgent MRI scan which is needed before surgery and to show if there is any lymph node involvement or spread.

I am going absolutely out of my mind with worry, and keep waking up in the night with fear and terror. I am trying hard to keep off the internet, but just don't know what to do with myself.

Thinking of others in the same boat x

  • Hi Lottie,

Sorry to hear about your situation. I can imagine how stressed and worried you must be.

I don't know if this is helpful but I went through something similar back in early 2020. I had a large polyp found via a flexible sigmoidoscopy, I believe it was around 3cm in size. It was removed via a colonoscopy in multiple pieces rather than surgery but it was entirely benign. I had another one just as large further round the colon which was removed at the same time and also found to be totally benign.

Just wanted to share my experience so you know that just because your partners polyp is large, doesn't mean it is automatically going to be cancer. I have recently had a follow up one year on from the procedure and other than one small polyp, it was totally fine.

  • Hi what type of polyp did you have? I have a 3cm flat polyp more likely to be cancerous rushed to get mri and ct. they even wrote cancer found on my report.
