Abscess in child not healing

I am looking for some advice regarding my 15yr old teenage daughter. She developed what is thought to be an abscess just below her nipple that was investigated at breast clinic, subsequently burst and left a 2cm open wound. An ultrasound at the time found nothing of concern.  The consultant referred for a second opinion because it was unusual in appearance. She also said nothing to worry about but it could take six months to heal and referred to paediatrics for wound dressings. Here we are six months later and the wound is pretty much the same :( She has seen a tissue viability nurse and tried various treatments but now she is saying that she needs to refer to the plastics team to explore other treatments because they'd expect a health young girl to heal. The wound keeps over-granulating meaning it cannot close. I am going out of my mind with worry that it is inflammatory breast cancer but I dont know whether this would have been picked up in the scan or in blood tests or just the appearance from the outset. The breast clinic discharged in February. Has anyone gone through anything similar.

  • Hello worried_parent

I'm sorry to hear that your daughter is having to deal with this ongoing abscess. It's understandable that you're feeling worried.

I certainly think it's reassuring that there were no concerns raised at the initial breast clinic appointments but given that despite all the clinical input she has had from paediatirics and the tissue viability nurse, I can understand that you're anxious there could be more going on.

It's good to hear that she has been referred to see a plastics specialist. Hopefully, they will be able to offer some insight and put her on the right path to getting this sorted. In the interim, I wonder if you might find it helpful to talk things through with one of our team of nruses,. I'm sure that they'll be able to offer some advice and reassurance about your concerns. They're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

I really do hope that things improve for her soon.

    Best wishes,
