Waiting for biopsy

Hi all

i went for a 2ww at dermatologist on Monday about my dysplastic nevi. It's grown slowly over the last few years and each year I've had it checked. The GP last year looked at photos I sent over and said that it looked fine. However, this year a NP decided although looked ok she would refer me back to hospital.

the dermatologist didn't really talk much. Took my family history ( no melanoma in family but fair skin and a little sunburn in the past) she looked through detmascooe and compared photos from 3 years ago taken by hospital. Her words were "I don't like the look of it" but I can't remember if it was before she compared photos or what order. She said to go back Friday and have the whole thing removed and then said  that after that will talk about treatment if required. I was in shock I couldn't even think about asking what she meant.

im guessing she suspects it has turned bad but she didn't say much at all. I haven't slept or eaten since Monday and I have a 3 and 8 year old. I am convinced that I won't see them grow up. I'm an absolute mess.

The biopsy is Friday lunch time. I'm guessing there is no point in asking her if she thinks it's bad as I will probably wind myself up even more.

Sorry for the dragged out post I'm a mess and don't have anyone to talk to about it.

  • Hi Saz,

I saw the dermatologist 6 weeks ago about a mole I realised had changed and looked very suspicious. I keep going over what she said in my head and thinking the worst so I know how you feel. I had to wait 2 weeks to get the mole removed which was horrible because I just wanted it gone, wouldn't even look at it! I felt a bit better once it was removed so it's good you only have to wait until Friday.

Remember that many lesions look suspicious but turn out to be fine, it can be difficult for the dermatologist to tell. Perhaps she is erring on the side of caution in wanting it removed. Even if it has turned dodgy it sounds like you've been monitoring it and getting it checked every year so it will have been caught early. If it's benign, well then it's gone anyway and you never have to worry about it again!

I know its really hard not to feel anxious about it. I was a wreck for a few days before I calmed down. It's a bit of a rollercoaster!! But try to tell yourself positive things. Chances are that it's benign or very early stage and you will be absolutely fine!!
