Partner in denial

Hey all,

I'm new here and just looking for some advice!

My partner (40) has had blood in his stools for over 2 years, despite my nagging he refused to go to the doctors as he is apparently "invincible" !
Well after noticing that blood was literally leaking into his clothing, I rang the doctors myself and booked him an appointment last week, they asked him to do 2 stool samples (one being a FIT Test) which came back abnormal... he has now been booked straight in for a colonoscopy on the 14th on the June.
But he is in an immense amount of pain in his lower left abdo area and has been for 6+ weeks!
It hurts when he passes a bowel movement, it keeps him awake all night, but he won't go to the hospital for it .... and is instead choosing to work him self to the ground through the pain.  He is agitated and absolutely exhausted!  Not only this, but he has had a cough that has got worse (coughing and choking at all hours)

Obviously we won't know what's going on till the Colonoscopy is done but he has made comments thinking thinks are really bad. He even went as far to ring his insurance to check his cover was all up to date.

Anyone else have stubborn patients and know how to deal with them?

We have 3 school age daughters and his mother living with us and it's like treading on egg shells at the moment!
I completely sympathise that this is such a horrible experience for anyone to go through... but how to do I get through to him?

Worried Wifey x

  • Hi.

This sounds very stressful and worrying for you both. I dont really have any advice for you other than just let him know your there for him. But not in in nagging kind of way. He is probaly very scared about the prospect if tests and hospitals. It is very scary! But Obviously he needs to be seen by a doctor as soon as possible as something isn't right,  but you can't physically make him. It's a tough one. I wish you all the best xx
