Thyroid Nodules

Hi,

A friend pointed out a lump in my neck over 4 years ago when I was 19 which I followed up with visiting my GP and had a blood test whihc came back normal and an ultrasound that came back that I had 2 nodules on my thyroid which one was 1cm and other one was 1.5cm and with me having no symptoms we went for a wait and see approach.

2 month ago I noticed the lumps was getting bigger and suffering from other symptoms such as hoarseness, difficulty swallowing and breathing, hair thinning and fatigue. So yet again I visited my GP had blood test which was normal, then an ultrasound that shown the nodules had gotten bigger bother over 3 cm and shown that one nodule was suspicious.

I got referred to a ENT specialist with an urgent qppointment within 2 weeks which i went to on Tuesday as I needed a biopsy with one nodule being suspicious. The specialist examined me and also had a camera to check vocal chords and explained that I needed a biopsy as the nodule is U3/U4 and a CT to check chest area. But he stated there was no time to do it that day and that I would need to go back to get these done. Has anyone else experienced this and how long did it take to get an appointment for this?

Obviously I am worried as he explained why it looked suspicious for cancer and waiting for an appointment is making me anxious.

  • Hello Ramsey51

I'm sorry to hear about the health concerns that you've had recently and that following an appointment with the specialist there were some concerns about the nodule. It's understandable that you're feeling worried about things and I think that most of our members here will know how difficult this period of uncertainty can be.

It often happens that patients aren't able to have all the diagnostic tests needed at their initial appointment so whilst the waiting is difficult, please don't feel that this is not usual practice. Hopefully, the Consultant will have requested these further investigations as urgent and you won't have to wait too long but if you're anxious then why not give the clinic or the Consultant's secretary a call next week to find out when you should expect to hear some news.

In the meantime, if you'd like to chat things through with one of our team of nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm. I'm sure they will be happy to help with any advice, information, and support that they can whilst you're waiting for a diagnosis.

Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello! How did it all go? Sounds very similar to my current situation and I'm currently so worried.
