Emergency Cancer Pathway - Colon Cancer

Hi all

I'm new here. Thought I would share my experience / symptoms with you all and look for some guidance / help.

I'm a fairly healthy 33 year old - no children, a healthy weight.

I've had on and off bowel problems since 2012 - was diagnosed with IBS etc and never thought anything else of it. Very occasional presentations of bright red blood when wiping. Nothing special to report.

The episodes got worse in August last year, and were accompanied by a strange intermittent pulling pain under my left rib (right at the bottom). I've grown increasingly gassy (not severe), and often get lower back pain and the same pain that seems to swap sides to below my right rib. I was diagnosed with haemorrhoids at that same appointment and went away thinking nothing else of it. The pain increased in January and I was referred for a routine US and colonoscopy which I missed due to COVID.

Fast forward to last Thursday and I was admitted to A&E with severe stomach pain and several bouts of heavy bleeding into the toilet pan. My blood results showed no anemia, however slightly elevated cells indicating inflammation. A DRE found a small pile and some fullness in my bowel (although I strongly suspect - without being groce, this was due to my period and the fact I had to use kitchen towel as I left the house in a rush). I had my first US on Tuesday. The sonographer was lovely - if a little evasive. However she did say that she could find no reason on the US for my pain.

My only other symptoms are more of an urgency to pee, the same pain under my rib, and occasional lower back pain.

I have my colonoscopy on Tuesday; and I am terrified of what they will find. Dr Google is saying cancer due to the slight elevation of bloods and inflammation. On the plus side, the bleeding has stopped and the pain is no longer intense. I am otherwise fit and well with no weight loss, loss of appetite or tiredness.

Any advice please :)

  • Hello Flowerpot87

I'm sorry to hear about the ongoing health issues that you've been dealing with. It sounds like it's been a difficult time for you and it's understandable that you're feeling anxious about the colonoscopy on Tuesday.

I think that most of our members here will know how difficult this period of waiting for tests and results can be and unfortunately, Dr. Google is well renowned for being a doom merchant! Please do give it a very wide berth because searching Google will leave you without answers but with more anxiety about things.

Try to keep positive and remember that your recent ultrasound showed no immediate cause for concern and in general you say that you've been fit and well. Whilst it's natural to be worried, there could be a number of causes for your symptom and hopefully, the procedure on Tuesday will give you some answers and bring you closer to things improving.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
    Jenn
